• Is he applying the stain with sandpaper? Never seen that before, wonder if that helps the stain penetrate the wood more or something. Also what's the purpose of the heat gun? Does that create a deeper color?

• Would it be advisable to sand and finish (darken) the end cap before installing it? That way you wouldn’t have to worry about getting brass darkener on the wood? Or is that completely unnecessary because repeated muzzle blasts would render all of that moot?
