Flintlock ignition system
On a flintlock, flint gripped in the cock's jaws strikes a steel frizzen. Sparks fall into a pan of priming powder that ignites and flashes through a touch hole to set off the main charge. Flintlocks were dominant from roughly the 1640s to the 1830s.
