Staining: How should I stain walnut, cherry, maple, or ash?

Maple and ash are commonly stained with iron nitrate, and sometimes with other stains. Walnut and cherry can be left without stain or with minimal stain, since their natural color already shows well. Walnut or cherry are occasionally stained to adjust color.
