Can lye stain be used to darken cherry wood on a build?

Jim has not used lye stain himself, but customers have reported it gives a deep, dark, rich, redder color on cherry. Some say oven cleaner, which is basically lye, works, while others prefer straight lye such as Red Devil lye, but Jim has no firsthand experience to confirm which works better.
