Yes, the lock must fit into the mortise. You will likely need to trim a small amount of wood from the mortise to clear the lock internals. Use transfer color on the inside of the lock to identify where it is rubbing and preventing insertion, then trim wood only from those contact areas. Repeat this process until the lock fits.
