Locks: How are Kibler locks heat treated?

There is no need to anneal prior to carburizing. For carburizing for hardness, pack in a mix of bone and wood charcoal, hold at around 1550°F for 1 to 1.5 hours, and quench directly in water from that temperature without reheating. To prevent lock plate warpage, block the plate by attaching it to a thicker piece of steel with stand-off spacers, and quench straight down into the quenchant. For the frizzen, rather than carburizing, heat the entire piece to around 1550°F with a torch and brine quench. Afterward, draw back the pan cover and toe to a blue color, leaving no temper on the frizzen face.
