Lock care - mainspring vise technique
Use a mainspring vise when removing the mainspring. Compress the spring only enough to remove it while the lock is at rest. Position one leg of the vise near the spring hook so it simulates the spring load in the lock. Back off the vise if the lock will be left unassembled.
