Why is the front screw hole for the buttplate offset slightly from the hole in the stock?

The front hole in the buttplate is intentionally offset a small amount from the corresponding hole in the stock so that when the screw is driven and pulled down, it draws the buttplate forward into tight, gap-free contact with the wood.
