Why do some maple trees curl and others don't?
It's understood to be a genetic characteristic, comparable to curly hair in people, rather than something caused by wind or difficult growing conditions. If you find one curly tree, you're more likely to find others nearby, and there have historically been efforts, including work in Germany, to try to propagate curly trees for uses like musical instruments.
