Why do longrifle barrels have a swamped, tapered shape instead of being a constant diameter?
The swamped barrel profile puts most of the weight toward the breech, which gives good balance to the rifle. The added material at the breech is also needed there for strength, and the shape gives the rifle a graceful, traditional look.
