What is the difference between red maple and sugar maple for curl?
Red maple produces curl much more frequently than sugar maple and generally produces more vivid curl. Red maple is not the ornamental burgundy-leafed maple sometimes planted as a landscape tree, which is actually a Norway maple; red maple is the type that produces bright crimson leaves in the fall, and Norway maple is also considered a fine, hard stock wood.
