Stump cut refers to taking advantage of the natural flare or bell shape near the base of a tree, where the grain follows that contour. Cutting a stock blank to follow this flare lets the overall grain flow down the wrist of the stock and follow the profile of the rifle, which makes the stock stronger, and it's often found together with compression figure near the roots.
