What gives ash its unique bark pocket figure, and how is it typically stabilized?

Some ash boards have a very undulating surface with bark pockets grown into the wood, creating a unique figure sometimes described as bark pocket ash. Small ingrown bark pockets or cracks are commonly stabilized with cyanoacrylate (CA) glue.
