What causes dark streaks sometimes seen in maple, and are they a problem?
These streaks, sometimes mistakenly called mineral streaks, are actually caused by an ambrosia beetle boring into the wood, whose excretions stain the surrounding wood. They are usually less desirable in gun stocks than in furniture, and the frequency varies by region, occurring more in some areas like southern Indiana where it's sometimes called flag worm.
