What actually causes the curl or figure seen in maple?
Curl comes from the wood's grain fibers, which normally run straight lengthwise, instead being bent in a wavy pattern in three dimensions rather than just one. When the board is sawn or planed through this irregular wavy shape, it creates areas of long grain and areas of more end grain, and that variation in grain orientation relative to the surface is what produces the visible stripes or figure.
