How does percussion ignition work compared to a flintlock?
A percussion cap is placed on a nipple; when the hammer strikes and smashes the cap it explodes, sending a flame through a flash channel into the barrel to ignite the main charge. This percussion technology was invented around the 1820s but did not come into common use until roughly 1830 to 1835.
