Are red maple, silver maple, and western big leaf maple all suitable for gun stocks?
Red maple varies in hardness: some is very soft and unsuitable for a gun stock, while some can be as hard as sugar maple and machines very well. Silver maple is never suitable for a gun stock, and western maple such as big leaf maple is rarely suitable because it typically runs too soft, even though an occasional hard enough piece might be found.
