Why doesn't my stock's curl figure look impressive right out of the box?

Curl figure in wood often only shows up under certain lighting conditions, so a stock can have significant curl that is not visible until it is turned in the right light or until the wood is finished. It is common for the figure to become much more apparent once the stock is completed, even if it looked unremarkable earlier.
