Why does the Southern Mountain Rifle use iron or steel hardware instead of brass?

The Southern Mountain Rifle uses iron or steel furniture rather than brass because that style developed among builders in the mountains, who were often blacksmiths familiar with forging rather than brass casting. Brass also may not have been readily available in those remote regions, so a unique iron-mounted style developed there.
