What wood did original Hawken rifles typically use, and how were they finished?
Walnut was fairly popular for original Hawken rifles, but many surviving examples actually used straight grain maple rather than curly maple. They were often finished with a dark brown varnish applied fairly opaque over the whole stock, and on worn originals you can see areas where that varnish has rubbed through to a lighter color underneath.
