Did original longrifles always have a brass plate on the end of the patch box lid?
No. Some original guns had a brass plate on the end of the patch box lid, while others simply left the wood end grain exposed with no metal plate. If a build uses just wood at the end, the wood is filed flush with the buttplate instead of removing extra wood for a plate.
