Why shouldn't I just drill a pin hole through the metal part freehand using the hole already in the wood?

Drilling freehand can work, but it is very hard to get the drill bit lined up on axis with the existing hole, and chips coming out of the drill as it cuts the metal tend to wallow out the hole. Using the drill guide bushing keeps the bit centered and avoids oversizing the hole in the wood.
