Why shouldn't I dry fire a percussion Hawken rifle without something on the nipple?
You should never drop the hammer directly on the nipple. Hold the hammer back or place something like a piece of wood or rubber on the nipple to cushion it before dropping the hammer, to avoid damaging the nipple.
