Why should the patch box lid fit with a slight bit of play instead of a perfectly tight fit?

A patch box lid that fits too tightly can be a problem because changes in humidity, such as being out in the rain, can cause the stock to swell and lock the lid in place so it cannot be removed. The dovetail is opened up slightly so there is a small amount of wiggle room to allow for that wood movement.
