Why is quarter-sawn curly maple harder to carve than other grain orientations?
On the quarter sawn face, the growth rings run perpendicular to the surface, which makes the wood prone to chipping. Cutting curly wood in this orientation takes lighter cuts and a sharp tool to avoid tear out.
