Why is it important that the lock bolster contacts the barrel with no gap?
The lock bolster needs to make contact with the side of the barrel because if there is a gap, powder can get behind the lock and that creates a problem. Wood is removed carefully in that area, guided by transfer color, until the bolster seats fully against the barrel.
