Why is grain direction so important when carving a stock?
Wood generally cuts cleanly in one grain direction and will tear or pull out if cut against the grain. A useful way to check is that cuts made with the grain look shiny, while cuts made against the grain tend to look grayer, since cutting against the grain pulls the tool into the wood rather than slicing it.
