Why is a drill bit sized just to the hole used to squeeze barrel pin holes through the stock?

Using a bit that just passes through the existing hole in the wood, barrel tang, or under lug locates the new hole exactly on center with the hole already present, so the drill does not wander or enlarge the hole. The drill should feed straight in line with the existing hole rather than being pushed to one side.
