Why does the wood sit slightly proud of the metal parts on a Hawken kit before finishing?
It is intentional so the wood can be sanded down flush to the metal for a perfect fit. Machining wood can tear slightly in places, so leaving a bit of wood above the metal gives room to sand it to a clean, tight fit.
