Why does the trigger sometimes need material removed before it fits the lock?

The top of the trigger sometimes needs to be filed or ground down slightly so it mates properly with the sear. The goal is a small amount of play between the trigger and sear where the trigger bar contacts the sear, especially at half cock, since too much pressure on the trigger at half cock is undesirable even though some pressure at rest is fine.
