Why does iron nitrate stain need to be heated after it is applied?
After iron nitrate is applied to the wood, it should sit and dry for about 15 to 20 minutes, during which it looks somewhat greenish. Heating it with a heat gun changes the chemical makeup of the stain particles, producing a dramatic color shift. You want to heat it enough to trigger that color change without scorching the wood.
