Why does curly maple darken unevenly when stained with tannic acid?
Curly maple has a wavy grain, so a flat surface cuts across the grain at different angles. End grain areas soak up the tannic acid and stain much more readily than the straighter grain areas, and this uneven absorption is what produces the increased contrast in the figure.
