Why does a rifle stock need to have its grain raised before finishing?
Sanding, filing, and shaping can compress the wood grain like crushed straws, so a stock can look smooth but still fuzz up once water or finish is applied. Raising the grain ahead of time, by wetting the stock and sanding again after it dries, prevents that fuzzing from happening later during actual finishing.
