Why do you scribe a line around the patch box lid before finishing the stock?

Scribing a line around the edge of the box lid marks where the wood underneath the lid must be flat, since that area needs to stay a flat plane while the surrounding wood is blended up to it. This scribed line gives a visual guide during sanding.
