Why do the edges of a lock plate need filing before it will fit into the mortise?
Lock plates arrive with an as-cast finish that is relatively smooth but not trued up, so the edges need to be filed slightly, along with a small bevel of only a few degrees, to help the plate seat properly and pull in and out of the mortise more easily.
