What tools are used to smooth the background of a relief carving?
Most of the material is removed with chisels, then files can be used to true up larger open areas, and a scraper or Scotch-Brite pad can finish the surface. Riffler files are useful in tight spots but should be used sparingly rather than relied on heavily.
