What stain and finish would you recommend for a first time builder?
Iron nitrate stain is generally recommended because it is traditional, looks good, and is long lasting and light fast. For finish, permalyn sealer is a fast drying and durable finish that most beginners have good success with, while tried and true oil varnish is a more traditional linseed oil based finish that takes longer to dry and needs sunlight to cure well.
