What is the difference between clean tool marks and torn grain when carving?

Clean tool marks, or facets left by a chisel, are perfectly acceptable and even attractive on a carved background. Torn grain is different and is a flaw: it happens when the wood breaks rather than slices cleanly, and it will show clearly once the gun is finished.
