What is the correct way to remove the mainspring from a flintlock?

Use a vise to compress the mainspring rather than pliers or vise grips, since those tools risk damaging or breaking the spring. Use a vise large enough that pressure is applied out near the end of the spring rather than close to the coiled part, since the spring is much harder to compress if you clamp too close to that end.
