What is charcoal bluing and how does it work?
Charcoal bluing involves heating the whole barrel in a container packed with charcoal to roughly 900 degrees. The lack of oxygen from the burning charcoal forms a relatively thick oxide layer on the steel. It works well but requires specialized equipment and is not typically practical to do at home.
