What is burnishing and why is it done on a rifle stock?
Burnishing means rubbing a smooth, hard object such as a polished antler or wooden dowel over the finished stock. It smooths and slightly compresses the grain, giving the wood a different, more handled appearance, and afterward the wood soaks up less oil, which speeds up the rest of the finishing process.
