What is a good way to check a stock's surface for defects before staining it?

Use a light held at a low angle relative to the stock, known as raking light, which highlights the surface finish and reveals defects clearly. Checking the surface this way before staining and finishing is worthwhile even though it can be tempting to skip ahead.
