What backing should I use when sanding a rifle stock so I don't ruin the surface?
Do not sand by holding sandpaper folded in your bare hand, since that will round over surfaces unevenly. Back the sandpaper with something firm, like a block of wood, a wood block with a bit of rubber glued to it, or by wrapping the paper around a file.
