What are chip cuts on carved gun stocks?

Chip cuts are small traditional carved details, cut by stabbing a chisel down and then coming back at an angle to remove a small chip. They are common on American and English carving work and are kept traditional in style rather than made elaborate, to stay appropriate to the grade of the build.
