Should you alternate bone black coats with plain finish coats?
It often works well to alternate between a coat that darkens an area with bone black and a plain coat of finish, since the finish coat helps lock in the darkening. As more finish builds up, it has less to bite into for further darkening, and finishes with solvents can lift off previously applied darkening if rubbed too hard, so apply finish gently over darkened areas.
