Should a first time builder put a nose cap on the Southern Mountain Rifle?

Adding a nose cap to the Southern Mountain Rifle is discouraged for inexperienced builders because the wood at the front of the stock is very thin, making it easy to damage, and off the shelf caps will not fit properly. Some customers have added poured pewter caps successfully, but this is a tricky, more advanced project, and historically some original mountain rifles had caps while others did not.
