Should I use water or alcohol to raise the grain on a stock?

Water is recommended over alcohol for raising the grain because it has a stronger effect, causing the wood fibers to swell more fully back to their unstressed shape. Alcohol raises the grain less than it will raise later on its own, so it is not as effective for this step.
