Is a super high polish finish accurate for a historically styled rifle?
No, a very high polish is not typical of original work. Eighteenth century guns commonly show file marks and coarser abrasive marks, so a finish that is not perfectly smooth is not shoddy, it can look good and be historically appropriate. A preference of sanding up to about 320 or 400 grit, then using scotch brite or loose abrasive to add a bit of shine, is common rather than a full buffed polish.
