How tight of a fit should I expect between a buttplate and the stock before final fitting?
Buttplates are typically fitted to about 95 percent before final adjustments, since brass is malleable enough that small remaining gaps can be snugged in by hand. Softer brass is easier to adjust this way than harder brass.
