How should you sand around the lock panel moldings without damaging the shape?

Sand with the grain along the wrist and work up to the edge of the lock panel rather than sanding around the molding in a circular motion, which tends to create an unwanted groove. Lock panels are rarely heavily hollowed out on original guns of this period, so avoid over-defining the panel with a round or half-round file.
